LEARNING OUTCOMES

ILO1 – analyze the bioprocess scale-up parameters for commercial applications
ILO2 - interpret and optimize the bioprocess parameters to improve the bioprocess outcome.

ILO3 – apply the principles of mathematics, natural science, and engineering in determining and solving contemporary and complex problems in bioprocessing.

ILO4 – decide on the most feasible downstream processing strategy in industrial applications
ILO5 - design a bioprocess starting from a single cell to a final product
ILO6 - present the importance of bioprocess technology for a sustainable and circular bioeconomy to a group audience and appreciate the importance of group work.

CONTENT, ASSESSMENT AND WORKLOAD

Content

    The industrial importance of Bioprocess Technology, microbial growth, and product formation kinetics, process scale-up and design, bioreactor operation consideration, mixing in bioreactors, design and control of bioprocess parameters, Sustainable bioprocessing, and waste-to-value for green chemistry.

Assessment Methods and Criteria

    Continuous assessment

    After-lecture quiz, learning diary and viva (including self-assessment), and calculation exercise open book assignment (70% of the final grade).

    The final examination is from calculation exercises (30% of the final grade).

    Registration:

    • A maximum of 46 students are accepted to the course.
      • Biotechnology students (Master's Programme in Biotechnology and Biotechnology major of the Master's Programme in Chemical, Biochemical and Materials Engineering) as well as students in the Biomass Refining major of the Chemical, Biochemical and Materials Engineering master’s programme will be prioritized.
      • Priority will be given to students who have completed the recommended prerequisites.
      • Exchange students will be admitted if they fulfill the needed prerequisites and there is space left on the course.
      • Exchange students should send their transcripts to the responsible teacher during the registration period.
      • A course implementation may be canceled if the number of students enrolled in the course implementation does not meet the required minimum of five students.
