LEARNING OUTCOMES
This workshop course introduces students to the assessment of ecological and social impacts of materials, products and systems, and familiarizes students with the principles of the process. Students will also learn to use the CES EduPack tool (on Aalto computers) to support this assessment. Outcomes include a small assessment exercise and report.

Content

The workshop sessions consist of a lecture part and tutored working with CES EduPack tool (on Aalto computers).
Applies in this implementation:
This workshop type of intensive course aims to familiarise the students with principles of auditing and assessing the ecological impacts of a product, material or system. During the course the students will learn to use different tools, including dedicated computer software, to aid their design process in material selection and product-system development.
The course is organised in a form of 3 workshop days that are preceded by readings and accompanied by exercises. The course can be taken as an independent course, but in Autumn it links to Sustainable Product and Service Design Theory –course, and fits into the course schedule. It is mandatory for all the CS students of the Department of Design.
After this course the student will:
1) Understand the principles of auditing and assessing the ecological impacts of a product, material or system.
2) Learn to use computer-assisted tools to compare impacts of different materials and to assist in material selection, and in eco-auditing processes.
3) To be able to compare and improve existing design alternatives, and to pursue more sustainable systemic and material alternatives.
Assessment Methods and Criteria
Valid 01.08.2020-31.07.2022:
Course is assessed as Pass/Fail. Students must participate to lectures, produce an assessment, and deliver the project report.
