Learning Outcomes (valid 01.08.2018-31.07.2020): Student learns of:
- Historical roots of contemporary photography.
- Theoretical key concepts and their historical development.
- Relationship of theory and practical photography research.
Content (valid 01.08.2018-31.07.2020): The course deepens student´s knowledge about history and theory of photography, their central themes and historical roots and continuums which have effected contemporary photography. Students are able to form a general view of history and theory of photography, their developments and contemporary debates, and see the connections of theory to practical photography research. The course supports MA master thesis work and its cognitive processes.
The course aims at good knowledge of theoretical and historical discourses of photography. In addition there are exercises that develop the student´s writing skills and use of reference materials, aiming at improved argumentation skills and own thinking.
For English speaking participants there will be an alternative way of taking the course, as the lectures are in Finnish.
Assessment Methods and Criteria (valid 01.08.2018-31.07.2020): Assessment is based on an exam or other written works of the students. 80 % attendance to lectures is required.
Workload (valid 01.08.2018-31.07.2020): 80 hours lectures, 163 hours independent work (reading course literature and preparing exercises).
Study Material (valid 01.08.2018-31.07.2020): Course literature and other materials will be announced when the course starts.
Substitutes for Courses (valid 01.08.2018-31.07.2020): The course substitues former courses Theory of Photography DOM-E3007 and History of Photography DOM-E3006.
