Students will be able to describe the history, trends, and applications of digital audio signal processing, describe the concepts "dither" and "noise shaping", recognize and design digital filters used in audio signal processing, describe how the sampling rate of a digital audio signal can be altered, list sound analysis, synthesis, and effects processing techniques and their main features, explain basic principles and uses of audio codecs, describe what the concept "virtual acoustics" means, and apply the provided methods using the MATLAB software.

General overview, history, and applications of audio signal processing, dither, noise shaping, digital filters used in audio, audio-specific design methods for digital filters, sampling rate conversion, analysis methods for audio signals, digital reverberation and effects, 3-D sound and virtual acoustics, sound synthesis, audio coding and multimedia standards.

  • Must know: history, trends, and development of digital audio signal processing; recognize
    and design digital filters used in audio signal processing; list
    sound analysis and synthesis methods and their main features; list
    effects processing techniques and their main characteristics; explain
    how different kinds of audio codecs
    can be used; describe
    what the concepts ‘virtual acoustics’ and ‘3-D sound’ mean; apply
    the provided tools with MATLAB.
  • Should know: how to use MATLAB to produce interactive audio and video demonstrations related to audio signal processing.
  • Nice to know: technical details of certain vintage and modern audio effects processing units, music synthesizers, and audio codecs.

After the first lecture, which is reserved for introducing the course arrangements and for selecting a course work topic, there are 10 lectures, one per week. Each week has a different theme to which the three-hour lecture is related to. Each demo is presented as a part of a lecture to which it is closest to thematically.
