After the course you will be able to differentiate the biomaterials in
medicine and their central properties, understand the requirements set by the biomedical
applications, know biomaterial-tissue interactions and comprehend how to modify

Metals, ceramics and polymers as biomaterials, tissue engineering,
requirements of biological environment, host reactions to biomaterials, surface properties
and their modifications, testing of biomaterials

Course consists of individual and group work as well as of study discussions.

Study discussion themes:

Theme 1: Materials

Theme 2: Host response

Theme 3: Cell-Material interactions and tissue engineering

Theme 4: Degradative effects

Theme 5: Modification of biomaterials

Theme 6: Novel materials and regulation issues

An optional laboratory exercise "Modification of biocompatibility" is included on the course.
