The student will learn the most important higher cognitive functions, their underlying neural mechanisms, and relevant terminology, allowing him/her to study further independently and apply cognitive neuroscience knowledge in both science and engineering projects.
Content (valid 01.08.2018-31.07.2020):
The course gives an introduction to neuroscience of higher cognitive functions, including attention, memory, plasticity, language, executive functions, emotions, social cognition, and consciousness.
Assessment Methods and Criteria (valid 01.08.2018-31.07.2020):
Seminar presentations as a team on chosen focus areas, and examination based on course materials.
Elaboration of the evaluation criteria and methods, and acquainting students with the evaluation (applies in this implementation):
New: for year 2020 the course will be taught using a method of flipped class lectures. Students will read selected chapters from the course book (freely downloadable from: https://bookboon.com/en/introduction-to-cognitive-neuroscience-ebook) before each lecture, and then the lecture builds on the top of the advance-readings. The grade will be determined by performance in the exam that consists of both multiple choice and essay questions. Completing and returning at least three learning diaries, each containing at least one question to the teacher will result in the exam grade being rounded up (e.g., "3" becomes "4).
