Schedule: 10.09.2019 - 11.12.2019

Teacher in charge (valid 01.08.2018-31.07.2020):

Gheorghe-Sorin Paraoanu (2018-2019)

Christian Flindt (2019-2020)

Contact information for the course (applies in this implementation):

christian.flindt@aalto.fi

Teaching Period (valid 01.08.2018-31.07.2020):

I-II Autumn (2018-2019, 2019-2020)

Learning Outcomes (valid 01.08.2018-31.07.2020):

After the course, the student will master advanced methods for treating quantum mechanical systems. Using these techniques, the student can solve quantum mechanical problems involving particles in external potentials. The student has a thorough understanding of concepts such as Bloch’s theorem, the EPR paradox, the formation of Landau levels, and the Aharonov-Bohm effect. The student is familiar with modern topics, e. g. quantum information theory.

Content (valid 01.08.2018-31.07.2020):

Systematic treatment of advanced techniques in quantum mechanics: Dirac and matrix formalism, spins and angular momenta, elements of quantum information theory, the EPR paradox, pure and mixed states, time-independent perturbation theory, a particle in magnetic field, periodic potentials, scattering theory, identical particles.

Details on the course content (applies in this implementation):

Please see the MyCourses pages for the latest and fully updated information

Assessment Methods and Criteria (valid 01.08.2018-31.07.2020):

Homework and written final exam.

Elaboration of the evaluation criteria and methods, and acquainting students with the evaluation (applies in this implementation):

The final grade (1-5) is based on home work exercises (40%) and a written exam (60%).

Workload (valid 01.08.2018-31.07.2020):

Contact teaching: 48 h (2+2)

Independent work: 82 h

Exam: 3 h

Details on calculating the workload (applies in this implementation):

12 x 2 h lectures  = 24 h

12 x 2 h exercise classes = 24 h

12 x 4 h home work problems = 48 h

12 x 2 h reading material = 24 h

Exam + preparations = 15 h

Total = 135 h

Study Material (valid 01.08.2018-31.07.2020):

The course material will be listed on MyCourses together with the lecture notes.

Details on the course materials (applies in this implementation):

We will mainly be using the book "Quantum Mechanics: Concepts and Applications" by Nouredine Zettili combined with hand-written lecture notes.
