Lectures: Andriy Shevchenko (andriy.shevchenko@aalto.fi)

Exercise sessions: Elena Ilina (elena.ilina@aalto.fi)

Teaching Period (valid 01.08.2018-31.07.2020):

Not lectured (2018-2019)

IV-V (2019-2020)

Lectured every other year.

Learning Outcomes (valid 01.08.2018-31.07.2020):

After the course, the student is expected to be able to explain the optical phenomena considered in the course and the operation principles of the considered laser systems, apply the derived theoretical models to solving standard practical problems of laser physics, design and model typical cw and pulsed laser systems, and design and model new lasers and laser amplifiers based on known optical gain media.

Content (valid 01.08.2018-31.07.2020):

The course introduces physical foundations for lasers, including light-matter interaction phenomena, propagation of laser beams, laser resonators, rate equations for lasers, transient laser phenomena, principles and characteristics of cw and pulsed lasers, and some topical laser applications as a case study. The course contains lectures, exercise sessions and exam.

Assessment Methods and Criteria (valid 01.08.2018-31.07.2020):

The final grade is calculated from the lecture quizzes (5 %), home exercises (25 %), and exam (70 %).

Workload (valid 01.08.2018-31.07.2020):

135 h in total (42 contact hours and 93 hours of independent work)

Lectures 22 h + reading the lecture material 30 h

Exercise sessions 20 h + home exercises 40 h

Independent study 20 h

Exam 3 h
