Responsible Professor: Maarit Salolainen
Teachers: Eeva Suorlahti and Oldouz Moslemian
Details on the course content (applies in this implementation):
Students are familiarized with traditional, new, and experimental textile materials and production methods. Students explore traditional and/or experimental methods and manufacturing processes of textile materials and use them as a starting point for their individual projects. The approach of this course is experimental and practice-led and based on personal research.
Students learn how to manage creative processes resulting in innovative products and collections and recognize the new opportunities in the field of textiles related to neighbouring disciplines. Students without knowledge of textile techniques learn the basics of knits and knitwear, printed fabrics and/or woven fabrics in basic studio courses.
The ARTS students with previous knowledge in textile techniques and processes can take part in a multidisciplinary ENGARTs project as a part of the course. In this project multidisciplinary ARTS/ENG teams work in collaborative projects combining science and technology with textile design practices.
The ENGARTs Project or 1-2 textile studio courses are integrated into the course module according to the personal study plan of each student.
Elaboration of the evaluation criteria and methods, and acquainting students with the evaluation (applies in this implementation):
Activity and participation (25%)
Individual development (50%)

Additional information for the course (applies in this implementation):
Experimental Textile Design-course planning: Students can arrange their course module, after making the personal study plan and approval from the professor (Maarit Salolainen). The student have to register for Printed Fabrics Studio, Knits and Knitwear Studio, Woven Fabrics Studio, or Textile Collection: Processes and Finishings -courses separately in WebOodi. Only 1 to 2 studio courses can be integrated within the Experimental Textile Design module. Participation in the ENGARTs project is confirmed during the personal study plan sessions and the first meetings.
NOTE: This course requires students' full-time commitment in the module.
