After the course the student will be able:

  • to recognize the different phases in his/her master’s thesis process

  • to write a schedule, including a research plan, supporting the timely completion of the Master’s thesis

  • to understand the principles of scientific research and communication



This course is jointly organized by the School of Electrical Engineering and the Language Centre. The learning objectives concern both the overall thesis process as well as the writing process. Upon completion of this course, students will be able to
• recognise the different phases in his/her Master’s thesis process
• write a schedule, including a research plan, supporting the timely completion of the Master’s thesis
• understand the principles of scientific research and communication
• recognise the organisational and language features specific to the major divisions of a Master’s thesis in engineering disciplines,
• employ metatextual strategies to produce clear, reader-friendly text,
• apply advanced features of cohesion, grammar and punctuation common to academic writing in a Master’s thesis,
• assess common weaknesses in academic texts and revise to improve readability

Content (valid 01.08.2018-31.07.2020): 

2018-2019: Setting goals for the Master’s thesis process, time management, review of scientific writing practices and available sources and tools, providing and receiving peer feedback.

2019-2020: The ELEC part of the course focuses on setting goals for the Master’s thesis process, writing the research plan, as well as providing and receiving peer feedback.In the Language Centre part you are guided through the writing and revision process for some parts of your master’s thesis.In order to become familiar with the structure, function and language features specific to different parts of an MSc thesis, you will analyse different parts of sample MSc theses and research articles from your own field. You will also write and receive feedback on parts of your thesis. There will also be online web-based exercise available to improve on other features of writing not discussed in the course. Working Life Skills: Knowledge of research in own field, Skills in foreign languages, Information retrieval skills, Written communication, Self-awareness, Critical thinking skills, Analytical skills, Life-long learning skills, and Self-confidence.

Assessment Methods and Criteria (valid 01.08.2018-31.07.2020): 

2018-2019: Teaching methods are lectures and workshops including group works. The students are asked to do assignments that will support them to complete their Master’s thesis and keep the process alive. To pass the course participation in the workshops is compulsory.  

2019-2020: The course activities are
- Lectures, group discussions, assignment submissions and peer-reviews, revisions of own thesis text, as well as online exercises (videos & analysis). All assignments are connected to students' own thesis topic/project.
The assessment is based on
- individual assignment submissions, peer-reviewing, revisions of own thesis text, online exercises, and participation in contact sessions

Course requirements for completing the course with grade pass:

Part 1 (by ELEC)

  • Start lecture and two group meetings (+two meeting reports)
  • Submission of two (2) homework assignments
  • Participation in online peer-evaluation - four (4) peer evaluation comments

Part 2 (by Language Centre)

  • 1-2 instructional videos and one online language analysis task
  • Submission of two homework assignments
  • one individual feedback session

Workload (valid 01.08.2018-31.07.2020): 

2018-2019: Lectures/seminars 12 h, independent work 42 h. The course supports the Master’s thesis process.

2019-2020: Contact teaching 9 h (ELEC 4 h + Language Centre 5h) + independent work 45 h

2019-2020: The course focuses on the initial stages of the Master's thesis, thus as a general guideline it is recommended to attend the course when you have just started or about to start your thesis project (your thesis topic must have been agreed with your supervisor at the latest soon after the start of the course). Nevertheless, the course content is applicable at different stages of your Master's theses.
