LEARNING OUTCOMES
After the course the student be able to
- name different biopolymers as pharma targets and describe their general mode of action
- explain how molecules are entering the body, how they are distributed and metabolized
- summarize different aspects related to pharmacokinetics and toxicity
- correlate basic events in the human physiology with specific disease patterns
- recognize characteristic molecular features in the drug design of various blockbuster medications
- analyze structural properties of bioactive molecules and relate them to attractive binding within biological targets
- describe the different stages of drug development from the initial discovery to the market

Content

The development of effective medications against infective diseases and physiological disorders has had a major transformative impact on our societies, and pharmaceutical industries are nowadays an important factor in many countries' economies.
The course on Medicinal Chemistry provides a comprehensive overview of the developments in pharmaceutical research, from historically relevant examples to modern medicinal chemistry and 'biologicals'. Particular emphasis is put on the understanding of molecular principles and biosynthetic relationships.
The contact sessions will include in-depth discussions of important aspects such as modes of drug-target interactions, transport & metabolism, structure-activity relationship, and lead optimization & rational design. The course is complemented with general considerations regarding the development of pharmaceuticals and drug-to-market processes.
