Please note! Course description is confirmed for two academic years, which means that in general, e.g. Learning outcomes, assessment methods and key content stays unchanged. However, via course syllabus, it is possible to specify or change the course execution in each realization of the course, such as how the contact sessions are organized, assessment methods weighted or materials used.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

After successful completion of the course the student can work in an antenna project at least on the competent performer level - i.e., the student's working is well-planned and productive, and he/she can propose suitable approached depending on the situation.

More detailed learning outcomes:

The student is able to independently define the next steps of his/her working.

The student is capable of applying relevant antenna and microwave engineering theories and antenna design tools, such as CAD, in antenna design and problem solving.

The student has an ability to collect relevant information from scientific publications and he/she is able to critically evaluate and explain the applicability and validity of the found information.

He/she is able to design antennas for a given desired performance in given time and explain relevant design principles.

The student has a readiness to perform antenna-related measurements. The student can analyze the measurement results, identify possible error sources and estimate the measurement uncertainty.

He/she is able to effectively cooperate with the other students and work individually towards the joint goal.

The student is able to document, present and/or report the results of the work.

The student is able to self-evaluate his/her working, learning and know-how.

CONTENT, ASSESSMENT AND WORKLOAD

Content
  • valid for whole curriculum period:

The course consists of two practical antenna design tasks. In both the tasks, an antenna is designed based on basic theories with the help of an electromagnetic simulator (e.g., CST Studio Suite), manufactured and the performance is evaluated with measurements (e.g., vector network analyser, MVG StarLab). Both the topics culminate with a final seminar where the design task is reviewed and an end evaluation where the achievement of learning outcomes is reflected.

Assessment Methods and Criteria
  • valid for whole curriculum period:

Antenna design tasks and individual development during the course. The successful completion of the course requires active participation in the contact sessions. The assessment criteria are to be specified in the beginning of the course.

Workload
  • valid for whole curriculum period:

Contact hours 56 h (average 4 hours per week). Independent work 79 h (average 6 hours per week)

DETAILS

Study Material
  • valid for whole curriculum period:

Materials vary depending on the topic. Basic antenna books and scientific publications (e.g., in the IEEE Xplore platform).

The number of students is limited to 20 and the students will be accepted according to the following priorities: 1. students, who have the course confirmed in their major in the study plan, 2. students, who have the course confirmed in their minor in the study plan, 3. students, who have the course as optional in their major, 4. students, who have the course as optional in their minor studies, 5. other students in the order of enrollment. Students must confirm their participation in the first lecture.
