The economy today is characterised by the changes brought by two major trends: the transformation from products to services and expanding digitalisation. These trends are interlinked. Digitalisation and ICT drives the transformation towards services. Information services is the fastest growing service sector. There are only a few, if any, industry or societal sectors that remain unaffected by these trends - or few future IT professionals’ careers for that matter.
This course gives an overview of how service transformation and digitalisation affect the economy at large, how they shape business based on software and ICT platforms - and the digital business ecosystems and two-sided networked markets that often form around them. Further, the course highlights the topics with cases from different industries and via examples of specific technologies and enablers that drive digitalisation, like cloud computing, big data and analytics, Industrial Internet and Internet of Things, and how these affect existing industries like industrial manufacturing or health and wellbeing.
