Welcome to SGT lecture series of State of the World and Development!
This lecture series gives and introduction to the state of the world and development. It highlights the environmental, social and economic aspects of sustainable development and explores the dilemma of development from different perspectives. Lecture series is open for all.
Note!
- First lecture Monday 19th September! Lecture hall E, Otakaari 1
- To get study credits (2 ECTS) you should register to Yhd-12.3081 in WebOodi.
- To pass the course and gain the credits, you should attend minimum of 80% (8 out of 10) of the lectures and submit a written assignment during the course. See: Assignments page.
- All possible changes to the lecture programme will be updated here in MyCourses front page.
- If you just want to come and join the lectures without study credits - you are welcome!
Lectures are held on Mondays at 14:15 - 16:00 (Lecture hall E) and on Wednesdays at 10:15 - 12:00 (Lecture hall A1) in Otaniemi campus. All lecturers are invited guest speakers, so please be respectful and come on time.

Ms. Suvi Virkkunen works as a Senior Adviser for the department for development policy at the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland.

CLIMATE CHANGE, Philipp Schmidt-Thomé (GTK)
Dr. Philipp Schmidt-Thomé is a researcher and Head of International Cooperation at the Geological Survey of Finland, GTK.
Philipp is a German geographer (MSc. with minor subjects in geology and soil science) and a postgraduate in hydrogeology and engineering geology. He came to the Geological Survey of Finland in 1998. He was born in El Salvador, raised in Germany, Sudan and Colombia and completed parts of his studies in Chile and Thailand.

GLOBAL HEALTH AND DEVELOPMENT, Anna Pulakka, University of Turku
Dr Anna Pulakka is senior researcher at University of Turku, Department of Public Health. Her research interest are in objective measurement of physical activity in different populations. Anna did her doctoral studies in the iLiNS project, which developed and tested lipid-based nutrient supplements in preventing undernutrition among young children in Malawi.

FOOD & WATER, Matti Kummu (Aalto University, Water & Development Research Group)
Mr. Kummu is an Assistant Professor at the Aalto University department of civil and environmental engineering. His main research interests are interactions between human activities and water resources, spatial analysis in water resources field from local to global scale, climatic and direct human impacts on hydrology and sediment transport in Monsoon Asia and global water scarcity and its impact on food production and availability.

POVERTY Sara Lindeman (Hanken, Aalto New Global)
Sara Lindeman is a resercher at CERS, Center for Relationship Marketing and Service Management at Hanken School of Economics.
Sara's doctoral research focuses on market practices in subsistence contexts. Her research takes a multidimensional view on business for poverty reduction. Sara lectures on Branding at the Base-of-the-Pyramid and is project manager for the new TEKES funded project New Global. Sara has been also teaching at the Aalto field courses in Cambodia and Tanzania.

TOURISM, Florencia Quesada, University of Helsinki
Dr. Florencia Quesada is a Research Fellow at Helsinki Collegium for Advanced Studies of the University of Helsinki.
She has carried out primary research in Guatemala, Honduras, and Costa Rica, and in archives in France, Spain, and the United States. She has more than twenty years of experience as a researcher and lecturer at the University of Costa Rica, at the Department of Education at the Museums of the Central Bank of Costa Rica and in the past 15 years at the University of Helsinki.
Quesada has published on Central American urban cultural and architectural history, planning and sustainable tourism. Her latest book: "La modernización entre cafetales. San José, Costa Rica, 1880-1930", was awarded the best book on history in 2011 by the Academy of Geography and History of Costa Rica.

HUMANITARIAN CONSTRUCTION, Matti Kuittinen, Senior Advisor, Ministry of the Environment of Finland
Lecture includes introduction to SGT studio's humanitarian project.
Architect, D.Sc. Matti Kuittinen is focusing his research on the environmental impacts of humanitarian construction. He has worked in Haiti and Japan and participated into the development of the environmental policies in the field. Kuittinen teaches on several courses related to sustainable construction at Aalto University. He is also taking the research into practice in his office Kombi Architects Ltd.
