Instructions for using the industrial weaving machine for a thesis project:
Tiina (or Maija) will use the machine, and students can book times to weave their designs with her. Bookings are made in the meetings. Short times (1,5 -2 hours) can be booked for sampling, and longer reservations for production of longer pieces of fabric. However, you need to be available in the university for the entire industrial weaving time of the day you booked - if for instance the design of the student weaving before you does not work out, we will call you to start your weaving turn earlier.
Sampling will be made on TC-2 loom, and on the industrial machine itself. (All structures must be sampled on TC-2, but colour and material trials can be tested on industrial machine itself.)
Warp / loom information
Width of the warp = 4800 ends = 120 cm
Sett of the warp = 40 ends/cm
Width of the repeat = 2400 ends (px) = 60 cm
(Width for calculating the use of weft yarn = 130 cm)
For weaving with industrial machine you need to:
Email for Tiina two days in advance:
A TIFF file of one repeat of the pattern design, in adequate resolution, in colour mode Indexed Colours. Name it: Your Name Name of design Design
A TIFF file of each of the structures used in the design, in black and white, in colour mode Indexed Colours or Bitmap. Name them: Your Name Name of design Structure 1 etc.
OR (small scale, shaft loom type of designs etc) : A TIFF file of one repeat of the design, with structures in the design, in black and white, in colour mode Indexed Colours or Bitmap. Name it: Your Name Name of design Design with structures
An info card specifying the structures for each colour area of the design as well as the weft materials and density and order of wefts.
(Have a look on the industrial weaving sample folder for examples)
Take with you:
A woven sample of the design (without finishing)
All the weft material needed for the fabric
Remember to check:
The structures used in the design should divide evenly into the width and height of the design repeat.
Over all warp take-up of the design should be fairly even
Weft material must suite for weaving on industrial machine. If there are doubts, bring also option B.
Take enough of the weft material, calculate how much is needed
If you are going to dye the fabric, test with right materials must have been made.
The schedule for industrial weaving can be found in here:
Please note that you can not make bookings trough the link, but the weaving times should be agreed with Maija by email on in a tutoring session.
