The course aims to increase understanding of the concepts of supply chain management (SCM) and supply chain coordination. The objective is to develop student’s skills in analyzing the behaviour of large and complex supply chain systems from different perspectives. The topic is approached by using different theories and concepts, and also by using both qualitative and quantitative models and methods. The learning objectives are supported by journal articles, different type of individual and group assignments. During the course each student is expected to form a personal view of the theory of SCM, and critically assess the methods and models developed for coordinating demand and supply networks.

Each student can collect in maximum 100 points of the following mandatory assignments (all are mandatory parts of the course, and need to be passed):

- Article reviews 15 points
- Learning summaries of visitors 10 points
- Questionnaire 5 points
- SCM game and learning summary 10 points
- Essay 20 points

Final exam is one of the mandatory requirements. To pass the course students have to receive in minimum 50% of the maximum (20/40 points). The exam covers all assigned material (articles, cases, lectures and selections of textbooks. Although there are alternative exam dates, all students are strongly encouraged to take the first exam.
Note! To the first exam NO need to register via WedOodi (those registered to the course). For second exam you need to register via WebOodi.
Article reviews (3 reviews, grading 0-5 points each),
Mandatory part and individual work.
Since only a few textbooks have been written for an advanced-level SCM course, we use refereed journal articles as the primary course material. To understand the importance of studying academic articles, students have the opportunity to prepare a review of the articles marked with double asterisk ** in the readings list. Typically a review summarizes the idea and key findings of the analyzed article. Students should also challenge the authors, e.g., by presenting critical comments and/or counter views on the findings and/or by identifying possible flaws in the research setting, and/or reflect to other reading/course materials. One-page reports must be e-mailed before class discussion in order to be evaluated. There are several articles available to choose from for 6 separate classes (maximum 1 per class to review).
Learning summaries of visitors (2 reports, grading 0-5 points each)
Mandatory part, team work (4-5 members in each team).
There are altogether two or three visitors lecturing during the course. Visitors are integral part of the course. To support maximum level of learning outcomes of the course two reports of the visitor lectures are expected and mandatory. These reports summarize key issues of the lectures and are maximum 2 pages long. To get the maximum points students need to reflect the learned other issues lectured during the course.
Mandatory part, team work (3-5 members in each team). Two parts: 1) game, 2) learning summary max 2 pages.
Questionnaire (5 points)
Answering the questionnaire is individual work and it is mandatory. Group work after the questionnaire is mandatory also. Take your own computer to the class.
Essay report (one report)
Mandatory part, team work (4-5 members in each team).
Essay report is a written report including maximum of 10 pages. Report follows a structure of an article. Two options: 1) Team of students chooses a company or other organization for analysis. Team chooses one of the frameworks or combines issues/frameworks from the articles or lecture materials, and analyses the chosen company or other organization through the framework(s). 2) Team of students select 5-6 academic journal articles from one of the course topics (not those marked with double asterisk). Articles selected related to topic can be any from the journal data bases. Team summarizes and analyzes them, and develops a framework for further analysis. Based on results team prepare a questionnaire for companies or consumers.
In addition it is mandatory to present the essay, and actively participate discussions of other presentations.
