Preliminary work (for the first week with no lecture)
Date: to be done before the first lecture (Tue 9.1.2018)
Teacher: Joni Tammi, Anne Lähteenmäki
The purpose of this preliminary work is to introduce the course structure to you, the student. This way we can get to the actual course content faster, when we don't have to explain all the details during the first lecture.
There will be also some tasks that are rather "philosophical". They are included to get you used to thinking about the course topics from new perspectives, and also to challenge you to reflect on what kind of thoughts, ideas, feelings, etc., these topics can provoke in you and in others.
To complete the preliminary work in time (before the first lecture), reserve 2 hours for going through the given material. You can do this any time you want, as long as you do everything before coming to the first lecture on Tue 9.1.2018 (14:15).
Learning outcomes of the preliminary work
After the preliminary tasks, you should be able to:
- Understand what the course is about, how it is organised, and what is required for passing the course.
- Understand what the learning diaries are and how to write them.
- Appreciate the astronomical and cosmic distances, and assess the role of humankind on a cosmic scale.
- Recognise some central concepts related to human perspective regarding out place in the universe (such as "the pale blue dot", or "the overview effect").
Additionally, after completing the preliminary task, the student should have started writing their learning diary.
