Owe Flick: Introduction to Qualitative Research 5th edition (any edition will do)
A good overview to basic concepts and issues in qualitative research: See attachment
Bruno Latour: Science in Action, pages 1-63, open university press, 1987
Gives you an “inside of science” idea how and why research is being done and how academic world works: See attachment.
- Koskinen et al. Design Research Through Practice: From the Lab, Field and Showroom. Morgan Kaufmann 2011. See library.
- Howard S. Becker: Tricks of The Trade. Chigaco Univ. Press, 1998.
Course assignment: Take your current research plan and make a five page version of it. Normal margins, 1,5 line spacing, font times or times new roman 12. Improve your research plan with the knowledge you gain during the course. (NOTE: you may think your plan must be excellent already because you got in the school. 95% of plans by which people are admitted in our school are far from excellent, they just show enough promise to get started. It is common that not improving your plan after the Doing Research lands you 1 or 2 or even "fail" as an assignment grade, your target should be 4 or 5)
The research plan should be returned by email to MUO-L0004@aalto.fi . On sending you must use the following title info “Doing research rplan YOUR SURNAME” so that your email does not get buried. Louna will then compile the plans to folder for me. (NOTE: failure to name your plan correctly can lead to no marking from the course, be careful!)
We have been instructed to close all 2016 courses by the end of the year, so any outstanding submissions still then will not be graded (the final exam will be graded prior to xmas).
Course exam: Owe Flick: Introduction to Qualitative Research (see below)
The exams in October.

Wed 11.10.2017 klo 13:00 - 16:00, Arabia 869
The final third one in conjuction to general exam days of Aalto ARTS in late november (TBA)
If you cannot make it to exam 1 or 2, or fail it, you need to register to 3 through weboodi. instructions can be found here:
The course follows the general convention in grading, which is that grades are given within 3 weeks from the exam. If you felt that you had to guesswork your answers in the first exam, you might want to register to the second one. However, if you felt you knew what at least one of the questions was about, you are probably fine from the exam (+ there is always the final opportunity).
