Topic outline

  • About this course

In this course, project teams consisting of three to five students work on real problems posed by firms and governmental research institutions. The teams apply operations research methods to solve these problems and develop teamwork, communication, and project management skills.

In addition to using OR methods to solve problems, the teams produce project plans and interim reports, present their results in a final report, improve their presentation skills, and learn from the work of the other participating project teams. In addition, several excursions will be made to client organizations.

The first meeting of the seminar will be held on Friday, 11 January 2019 in Y344 (Otakaari 1). In this meeting, the course practicalities and general principles are presented (see the Course materials-tab). The clients present their topics and project teams are formed based on the students' expressed interest to work on these topics.

Topics, clients and project deliverables of previous seminars are in the Deliverables of previous seminars-tab.

Students who are interested in taking this course should register as early as possible in Oodi to ensure that enough topics can be prepared. If a topic cannot be provided to all registered students, then students are admitted to the course in order of registration.

The course has four mandatory meetings and goes on through periods III-V. Absence is possible only for exceptional reasons. The confirmed dates are
