The course introduces classical electromagnetism, explaining the fundamentals of static and time-varying electric and magnetic fields. The essential topics are
- electric charges and currents,
- static electric fields in free space and in dielectrics,
- static magnetic fields,
- electromagnetic induction,
- Maxwell's equations,
- creation and propagation of electromagnetic waves, and
- basic optical phenomena.
The course contains lectures, exercise sessions and laboratory work. The lectures are based on the textbook Understanding Physics, M. Mansfield and C. O'Sullivan (2nd edition, Wiley 2011).
