Topic outline

  • The course introduces classical electromagnetism, explaining the fundamentals of static and time-varying electric and magnetic fields. The essential topics are

    • electric charges and currents,
    • static electric fields in free space and in dielectrics,
    • static magnetic fields,
    • electromagnetic induction,
    • Maxwell's equations,
    • creation and propagation of electromagnetic waves, and
    • basic optical phenomena.

The course contains lectures, exercise sessions and laboratory work. The lectures are based on the textbook Understanding Physics, M. Mansfield and C. O'Sullivan (2nd edition, Wiley 2011).
