URBAN PERIPHERIES II *3–14 Dec 2019*
*3-5 Dec@AaltoARTS/ESPOO – 7-14 Dec@UdK/BERLIN*
URBAN PERIPHERIES BERLIN WORKSHOP is the second joint workshop between UdK Berlin + Aalto ARTS Helsinki/Espoo.
Some fo the participating students took part in the 1st edition, and some enter the workshop as "new".
The first edition took place in February 2019 at Aalto ARTS Otaniemi
campus, with its focus on PERIPHERIES+MAPPING.
The
students produced alternative, polycentric and experiential maps in the
form of public space interventions,
installations and visual presentations addressing and capturing a
variety of peripheral takes through spatial, embodied, visual and
auditive means of expression.
The second, December edition at Aalto ARTS (3–5 Dec) + UdK Berlin (7–14
Dec), continues the inqueiries on "peripheral issues / peripheries" via practice & theory,
through exploring different kinds of peripheral
means –
conceptual, sensorial, spatial, temporal, imaginary, visual – in SITE+BODY relations.
The
students will address the interconnected relations through focusing on
the interplay of place and body,
where also the space of the body expands into an experimental
"exhibition space" in which corporality, movement and action create a
dialogical relationship with the situational components of each event –
where audience, traffic, multisensorial elements, light
and other components may have multitude of varying roles.
The
workshop aims at enlarging the understanding of peripheries/
peripherality into areas that are difficult to verbalize. Peripheries
are
conventionally conceived as marginal geographical locations, whereas we
will explore peripheries as ambiguous and multifaceted phenomenon – as
conceptual domain, aesthetically and spatially experienced sensory
spheres and states of mind shaped by complex associations
and mental images.
