General principles regarding homework assignments
Homework assignments are an important component in reaching the learning objectives of the course. Solving and discussing problems in groups is strongly encouraged.
There will be 6 sets of homework assignments with 6 problems in each. The problems will be published in MyCourses in the beginning of every second week. Written solutions should be handed in the mailboxes opposite to Laskutupa before the deadline. Solutions to the homework assignments will be published in MyCourses after the deadline. The graded solutions will be returned in the exercise sessions.
Solutions to one problem in each set of homework assignments will be graded with the scale 0-6. This gives detailed feedback on the learning progress. The other problems will be graded with the scale 0-2 (0=no solution, 1=partial solution, 2=solution). The course participants are expected to compare their solutions to these problems with the model solutions themselves. The maximal amount of credit points for each set of homework assignments is 16.
Assistants help in solving the homework assignments during weekly tutorial sessions. Many problems can be already solved during these sessions, and this reduces the amount of out of the classroom work. The course assistants are happy to discuss all homework assignments.
