Evaluation
This course is pass/fail.
To get 2 credits, you need to give a presentation and attend 80% of classes (I know attendance is not always possible so just get in touch if you're going to be away).
To get an additional 2 credits, you can be a discussant for someone else's paper.
How class will be structured:
We will do this twice in each class: presentation for 20 minutes, 10 minutes discussant's response, 10-15 minutes discussion with the audience
What you need to do:
2 weeks before your presentation - email me a brief description of your talk. I will use that to invite faculty and researchers in the Department of Design. I will also post it on the class Facebook page and you are welcome to invite people as well.
1 week before your presentation - email me a draft of your paper in whatever form you think is appropriate. I will share that with the rest of the class and your discussant.
Presentation expectations - as discussed, this course is intended for getting feedback on works in progress and for sharing current research across the department. This means that we are going to have a big variety in presentations - some will be first year doctoral students sharing lit review results or research plans, some will be final year students getting ready for defense, some will be conference presentations, etc. Please introduce your presentation by explaining what the context is for your work and what kind of feedback you are hoping to get.
Discussant expectations - read the paper ahead of time and come prepared with a few minutes of remarks (what interested you about the topic, strengths and areas for improvement/clarification, new things to think about) and a few questions (lasting 10 minutes). You will stand at the front with the speaker to have this conversation. Please give your notes to the presenter after the class.
