Grading

  • Grading

    Grading

    Grading principle

The course grade (0 - 5) is an average of the grades for the first and sencond halves of the course (periods III and IV correspondingly) according to the following scheme:

    1. half grading

    • 1. mid-term exam (80 %)
    • six homework assignments (HW0 – HW5) (20 %)

    2. half grading

    • 2. Mid-term exam (80 %)
    • Five homework assignments (HW6 – HW10) (20 %)

    Passing with exam only

The course can be passed also with a single exam, covering the whole course. In the full course, the grading is either 100 % based on the exam, or 80 % exam / 20 % homework assignments, whichever gives a higher grade. The homework scores earned during the course are valid until the next time the course is lectured.

NOTE: The mid-term exams do not require registration in Oodi, but the single exam one does require it, in case you take it.

    Calculation of the grade

A performance figure (in %) is calculated as based on the points earned in mid-term exams (MTE, max. 30 points), homework (HW, max 2 points each), and the optional exam (EXAM, max. 30 points) as

    1. Performance (mid term exams + HW) = 100 % * [ 0.8 * (0.5*PMTE1/PMTE1,max + 0.5*PMTE2/PMTE2,max ) + 0.2*(PHW0-10/22)], OR
    2. Performance (exam + HW) = 100 % * [ 0.8*PEXAM/PEXAM,max + 0.2*(PHW0-10/22)], OR
    3. Performance (exam only) = 100 % * PEXAM/PEXAM,max.

The final course grade is the highest of these three.

It is recommended to pass the course with mid term exams and homework, as this helps distribute the work load throughout the course.
