Course summary
The municipality of Vihti, situated approximately 50 km northwest of Helsinki, provides an interesting case study for strategic spatial planning. The municipality is currently facing a number of uncertainties that directly or indirectly have a spatial dimension: It's location at the edge of the larger capital region holds potentials for development but also comes with the threat of turning into a sleepy town of out-communters. The planned one-hour train between Helsinki and Turku could strengthen Vihti's accessibility and economic status, but it is not yet clear whether the train will stop in Vihti and how to ensure feasible connections to the potential station area from all parts of the municipality.
In the Planning Studio course, students will develop scenarios about the future of Vihti and work on plans and policies that enable short range decisions while keeping in mind long term strategies and uncertainties. The course puts special emphasis on the integration of land-use planning and transport planning.
Planning Studio (10 cr) is a compulsory course in the master's programme "Spatial Planning and Transportation Engineering".Course structure
The course consists of weekly learning sessions (including field trips to Vihti), group work and individual studying (see Course Schedule for detailed programme).
