Microservice Architectures and Serverless Computing (III-IV/2020)

  • Microservice Architectures and Serverless Computing (III-IV/2020)

Microservice Architectures and Serverless Computing (III-IV/2020)

IMPORTANT! Some students have had difficulties enrolling via oodi to the course. If you have any problems PLEASE DO CONTACT ME AT santeri.paavolainen@aalto.fi ASAP!

The introduction of cloud computing and the explosive growth of mobile computing and new online services brought also new ways of structuring computing systems: microservice architectures and serverless computing.

This course is targeted to students with basic understanding of service architectures and scalable architectures, and builds on top of that to look at what possibilities and new challenges microservice architectures and serverless computing brings on top of “classic” service architectures.

The course lasts 2 periods and is worth 5 credits (op). The work on the course consists of 3 hours of weekly lectures, group work exercises and individual project work.

Please note that while attendance apart from the first lecture is not mandatory, activities during class contribute about 40% of the final grading. It is possible to pass the course without attending classes, but it requires acing the project work and exam and would result in a poor grade even then. For more detailed information on the course contents please see the syllabus.

The course project work is in the form of developing a small-scale web service utilizing techniques and technologies learned during the course.

The 2020 course has a participant limit of at most 25 students. See below for details on student selection.

The course language is english. The course material is in the form of lecture notes and material available openly on the Internet.

    Prerequisites

Participants are required to have programming and web development skills, and have basic understanding of how to use Git. Experience with cloud infrastructure services (AWS, Azure, Google) and containers (Docker, Kubernetes) will help.

    Lectures

Lectures are on Tuesdays at 9:15-12:00 on both periods III and IV, except on some select days, exam weeks etc. The first lecture is on Tuesday 7.1.2020, with the following exceptions:

    • No lecture on Tuesday 18.2.

Please note that attendance is mandatory for the first session on Tuesday 7.1.

    Location

The location of the lectures is Simulation laboratory in the OIH building, Maarintie 6 (ground floor). There may be some exceptions which are communicated separately.

    Coursework

Personal coursework deadline is Sunday 19.4. (23:59). There will be an assignment opened during April for the submission.

    Exam

Course exam at the end of period IV in April. Detailed time and place will be added later.

    Enrolment

Enrolment to the course is via Oodi: https://oodi.aalto.fi/a/opasopettaptied.jsp?&OpetTap=1140897872.

IMPORTANT! Enrolment is finalized only after the first lecture. You must attend the first lecture to continue on the course. Any student not present at the first lecture is removed from the course. If there are more than 25 students in attendance the selection is based on the order of enrollment.

    Contact and Communication

Course teacher is Santeri Paavolainen (email santeri.paavolainen@aalto.fi). The course teaching assistant is Satenik Hovsepyan (email satenik.hovsepyan@aalto.fi).
