Topic outline

  • At the end of each lecture, we have shortly discussed two further papers related to each theme. Please select two of these paper-pairs and write two short memos about them. They should answer the following questions:

    1. What are the "take-aways” of the papers? Why are they important?
    2. What are the key simplifying assumptions (theory) and/or identifying assumptions (empirics)? Do you find these assumptions reasonable? Why (not)?
    3. In what respect do the papers contradict and/or complement each other?

Each memo should NOT exceed 1,000 words. The point is to see whether you understand the essence of the papers and to improve your writing skills (short is good; unnecessary words are a waste of reader's time; see How to get a good grade for further instructions). Please upload your report as a PDF file using the link below. The deadlines are Nov 15th and Dec 14th (6pm).

The papers are available at the authors' personal websites and/or JSTOR. The exception is Meriläinen, Mitrunen ja Virkola (2020), which is not yet publicly available. They have kindly provided us the current version, which you can download below (you need to be logged in as a student in order to see the file).
