The assignment is to design a new community library for the Toyosu area of Tokyo. The design area has been marked in the above image. The library building can be placed anywhere within these limits. SIT has recommended the area between Gas Science Museum and the sea. The thin dashed line marks the whole intervention area and the thick line Toyosu park, where the maximum footprint of buildings is 12% of the whole park areal. Existing buildings, structures and facilities within the area may be replaced by new additions. SIT students will make urban design for the whole area in collaboration with us and this plan might include also other buildings.

The floor areal of the library is 3.800 m2.

The focus is on the development of library architecture based on the understanding of Japanese generations – equal to our X, Y, Z etc.

There will be a possible study trip to Tokyo on March 19-31, 2021 (if the pandemic allows – the decision date is March 13th). SIT has promised to pay app. 650 eur / Aalto student for travel costs (60,000 or 80,000 yen/ student, depending on a student’s study performance).
