Topic outline

  •

The purpose of this week is to start practicing your talk since you have mostly put together the basics of the talk: you have the core plan and the visuals. To ensure your presentation falls within the time limits (10-12 minutes), practice at least once with your visuals and time yourself before recording the rehearsal video.

This week, you will video record (using Panopto) a rehearsal video (due by Wed 18.11 at the latest), get feedback on your presentation from peers, as well as analyze others' talks and give feedback (by Sat 21.11 at the latest). To aid providing useful feedback, familiarize yourself with some golden rules for giving constructive feedback. You will also be asked to reflect on your own rehearsal presentation (due by Monday 23.11).

    • First, practice and record your presentation using Panopto.  To video yourself, you'll need to use Panopto on a device (i.e. computer, tablet, or smartphone) with a mic and camera (of good quality). You're already familiar with Panopto, but I've attached the Panopto instructions for your convenience. Then, post your video link to this Forum by Wed 18.11 (4 pts) so that members of the group can access and watch your practice presentation.

You have been divided into small groups of 3-4 people from different fields. See the division of groups below. Watch the video of each peer in your group and give focused, constructive feedback on his/her presentation. Being constructive means that your feedback will be useful to your peer. By identifying the strengths of the presentation, you help to confirm what seems to be working well; by identifying the weaknesses, you help to confirm what could be improved. In other words, constructive feedback should be balanced and helpful, not harmful. Therefore, your task is to note down both the strengths and weaknesses of each talk while filling out this form. Try to be specific so that your peer understands the feedback. Give examples when needed. In this forum, post your feedback to each peer in your group (4 pts).

*In the event that your group has more than three people, give feedback to two peers - and ensure that each peer receives feedback from more than one person. (4 pts). These instructions apply to groups C and D.

Your feedback is due by Saturday 21.11.

A technical note: In Panopto, be sure to change the permission settings from "specified person" to "anyone in the organization with the link". Otherwise, your classmates won't be able to view your video.
