Topic outline

  • The assignment “Performative Patterns for open spaces“ will be done as group work (4-5 students/group), consisting of several parts:

    General Design Task:

Design speculation for the open space Ainon Aukio (plaza between Väre and the new Aalto Studio) integrating immersive design methods:

Explore different design strategies how the immersive integration of site-specific data, like the flow of people (note the different speed and usage during the time, season), wind, sun, incorporation of run-off water... can be dynamic parameter for your design exploration. Propose and test at least 2 different integration proposal of the robotic arm. Apply the amount of 1000m3 of excavation material from the local tram construction on site.

    Goals:
    • a critical reflection upon the tested design methods and tools
    • integration of site-specific data using Grasshopper (and Phyton)
    • a conceptual connection to the theoretical texts which have been handed out in the preparative phase

    Mid term review:

    Deliverables

Frame the vision of your speculative design/ performative pattern/ landscape story… through a series of conceptual diagrams that describe the basic conception of your design speculation grounded in a reflection of the context (site, climate, program, interaction with boundary conditions…), and your translation into operations and interactions of system thinking – performative patterns as design drivers.

Start to translate your conceptual diagrams into a script, which allows you to test your concept in an abstract manner (variations/performance/adaptation…)

Reference projects and relevant design questions to be found here: https://mycourses.aalto.fi/pluginfile.php/1268960/course/section/176386/Reference%20Material.pdf

    •          Intervention overview - scale depends on project

    •          Detail - one zoomed site (or more, project specific 1:200/1:100)

    •          Sections 1:200

    •          Diagram on time laps > adaptation over time

    •          Integrate video

    •          Integrate photos of physical models (sandbox)

    •          Demonstrate the tools impact on the design process and outcomes

    •          Demonstrate what methods/tools will be developed for the finalization of the design speculation.

    FINAL REVIEW - DESIGN SPECULATION:
All material should be uploaded by Wednesday 26.05.2021 at 18.00h!
Presentation style: you can use either your miro boards or a standard presentation. In case you use the miro boards, export a PDF of the presentation to be uploaded to the final submission dropbox folder.

    Deliverables

Following up on the communication method of the mid-term review, we ask you to hand in the following material:

    Concept Video
    • max 2 min video explaining the concept of your design speculation

    Axonometric drawing

    • showing the project perimeter drawn in standard isometric view with an appropriate level of detail according to your project scope

    • simple b&w line drawing use of textures is recommended

    • integrate the larger context in an abstraction style according to the chosen project perimeter

Animation and concept diagrams of the applied methods in the assigned perimeter:

    • smaller concept diagrams explaining the overall vision as well as the computational logic of your design

Zoom-in drawings of the applied methods in the assigned perimeter:

    • sections and plans, colored or b&w in vector and raster graphics, showing the progression of the design process, chosen scale has to match the level of detail.

    Render views

    • min 2 images showing relevant aspects of your design speculations

    Text

    • 300 - 500 words, short conceptual description of the speculation
