Topic outline

  • The purpose of the exercise is to get you familiar with the computational flow solution for the ship resistance problem using modern viscous flow solution methods. You will get to inspect the characteristics of a typical problem setup and will get a better understanding of the relevant parameters and available options to control the problem setup. By analysing the results you will see what kind of data these methods produce and how this data can be used to study a selected design. You will also investigate the influence of different turbulence models, as well as the scale effects related to the ship resistance predictions. Furthermore, during this assignment you will perform both local and global validation studies concerning your numerical method.

    The end goal of this exercise is to provide you tools to carry out a viscous flow analysis of your conceptual ship design, and to assess its resistance and flow field.  You will carry out the simulations using an existing state-of-the-art viscous flow solver as described in the task statement.

    You write a report on the simulations and present your work at the end of the course. You will get feedback on intermediate versions of the report and a semi-final version of the report will be peer-reviewed by a fellow student. Different versions of the report are to be submitted in the submission boxes on this page. The date of the presentations will be agreed on later during the course.

    • By this stage, the model- and full-scale results of KCS should be ready and validated, and properly reported. The report should be completed up to Chapter 3, excluding the simulations of your concept ship.

    • By this stage, also the full-scale  simulations of your concept ship should be completed. The Chapters 1-3 should be completed, and Chapters 4-5 initiated.

    • This should be as close as possible to the final version. The peer-reviewer provides feedback, and gives the work a grade. Each student will peer-review one submission from  another student. The purpose of the peer-review is to provide constructive suggestions on items that could be improved in the submissions but also to highlight the strengths of the submission. It will also provide a basis for comparison for the reviewers and might give fresh ideas to the reviewer as well.
