    -----------------

The course introduces the students to the design and analysis of thin-walled structures. The course utilizes problem-based-learning concepts so that the students are encouraged to work on various thin-walled structure problems throughout the course. The aim of the course is to identify thin-walled structures that the students will analyze using finite element method for different limit states (serviceability, ultimate, fatigue and accidental).

Each week an assignment to be solved is given, lectures will be held on Mondays and Wednesdays and we conclude the week with an exercise session on Thursdays where students can ask questions related to their assignments. Each week the student groups (3-4 persons) return a written report on Monday morning on the assignment that was solved during the previous week.

The weekly submissions will be graded from 1-5. The weekly assignments (weeks 1-5) will contribute up to 40% of the course grade, while the final summarizing submission (week 6) gives 10%. The remaining 50% of the grade is determined by a learning diary (or a final exam). The learning diary should reflect the lectures, weekly assignments and 10 selected articles for the best grade; for the articles, Elsevier, for example, has a journal called Thin-Walled Structures.

After the course, the student can identify the requirements for numerical analysis of large complex, thin-walled structures in terms of: physical understanding of the global structural static and vibratory response, force flow, materials and global and local approaches, i.e. homogenization and localization. Student can select the structural modelling techniques for different analyses: static, vibratory, ultimate and fatigue strength.
