  • Schedule:

    Lectures: Wedesnday 14:15-16:00 (Kaie Kubjas)

Exercise sessions: Friday 14:15-16:00 (Olga Kuznetsova)

    Organization:

All lectures and exercise sessions of this course take place online via zoom. Aalto users can see the zoom link at the end of this page. The lectures take place in real time and are not recorded, since there will be interactive tasks included in the lectures. Slides will be made available under Materials after the lecture. During the exercise sessions before the homework submission deadlines, students have the possibility to discuss in groups anything that remains unsolved and include the results of the group work in their solutions. During the rest of the exercise sessions, students can ask questions in real time. The course lasts two periods.

    Content:

In this course, we will cover selected topics from “Algebraic Statistics” textbook by Seth Sullivant. The topics include:

    • Algebra primer
    • Probability primer
    • Conditional independence
    • Statistics primer
    • Exponential families
    • Likelihood inference
    • Fisher’s exact test
    • Graphical models
    • Hidden variables

Time permitting, further topics will be covered.

    Goals:

At the end of this course, the student can

    • list topics in algebraic statistics
    • recognize problems in statistics that are answerable by algebraic methods
    • assess which algebraic methods are suitable for solving a problem
    • apply basic algebraic tools to solve a problem

    Exercises:

There will be six homework sets. Deadline for submitting homework is Fridays at 23:59pm (not every Friday since the course runs through two periods). During the exercise sessions before the homework submission deadlines, students have the possibility to discuss in groups anything that remains unsolved and include the results of the group work in their solutions. However, all students have to write up their own solutions. If you would like to improve your homework points, you can resubmit your homework with corrections until two weeks after you received points for it.

There will be additional reading assignments and a group project. In the group project, students are assigned to groups that read different chapters of the textbook, prepare presentations and homework on these chapters.

All homework is returned through MyCourses.

    Exam:

There is no exam in this course.

    Grade:

This course is graded pass/fail. For passing the course, one has to attend at least 10 lectures (group work is counted as 3 lectures), receive at least 60% of maximal possible points on homework sets and complete all additional assignments. Additional reading assignments and the group project are not graded by points.

    Communication:

The communication for this course takes place in Zulip. There is a separate channel for each problem set and assignment. Please be active asking your questions!

    Lecture materials:

The textbook for this course is “Algebraic Statistics” by Sullivant. The e-book is available for Aalto users.
