Topic outline

  •  Contact teaching activities & schedule for this week:
Schedule of the third week's Design for Government contact teaching activities.

    Pre-readings for this week:

    • For those who are new to systems thinking, please watch this intro session by Idil Gaziulusoy, it will help you understand key notions such as 'feedback loops', also mentioned in the Meadows chapter:

    • Read the Meadows chaper below before the session, It will help you to be prapared for the lecture and activities taking place during the day. This chapter presents key notions for understanding and analysing systemic problems, and visualising them as systems maps. Meadows, D. (2015) Thinking in Systems. Chapter 4 (p.86-110). Note: this is quite heavy reading, I recommend to read this with time.

    • Our guest lecturer, Esko Reinikainen, has asked that you to take a look at the EU Policy Lab Complex System Analyser - System Mapping Instructions https://knowledge4policy.ec.europa.eu/foresight/topic/complex-system-analyser_en
And think about linear vs non-linear thinking (mentioned also in the Meadow's reading): As you walk around and see different processes, methods, tools, projects, interventions or other things, ask yourself: “Is this the product of linear thinking or non-linear thinking?”. Esko also recommends the below video about visualising systems by Nicky Case, that we add as optional material below.
