  • This is a course on principles of biomedical imaging. The course is focused for students of BME and NEURO majors in LIFE MSc program. The key learning method at this course is solving various imaging problems on a computer; the lectures give some background info and cover essential maths & physics.

To pass the course, the student needs to
    • Solve enough exercise problems. There are six exercise rounds, and answer sheets must be timely returned for all rounds.
    • Return five course journals.
To succeed in these, the student needs to actively participate in teaching and follow the course discussion forums. The teaching is online; the lecture sessions are on Thursdays at 10h, and the exercise sessions are on Fridays at 12h and Wednesdays at 14h.

At the end of the course, the students shall have familiarized themselves with core concepts and theory of imaging, applied these concepts by analyzing imaging systems and estimating/reconstructing various images, and meanwhile learned problem solving, collaborative working, algorithmic thinking, and mathematical programming.

The course is designed for students of BME and NEURO majors. As prerequisites, we assume a BSc degree from Engineering Physics or Bioinformation Technology and experience in mathematical problem solving using computer. Also computer science and applied maths BScs with some physics background should do fine. With suitable background, the planned workload is 130 hours. Please see also the official course description in Oodi.

The exercises and related lectures are produced by different teacher-teams that are coached by the head teacher. Each team takes the perspective of one imaging modality.

To help prepare for exercises and lectures, I'd like to know more about you.
Please tell about your studies & background by answering following questions:

      1. Are you a BSc, MSc or PhD student?
      2. What are your major and minor subjects?
      3. If you are a MSc/PhD student, what were the major and minor subjects in your BSc/MSc degree?
      4. If you are still a BSc students, how much of the BSc you have left?
      5. How much background do you have on computer-based problem solving?
      6. Have you programmed with Matlab before? (functions, scripts, debugger...)

      Please respond by Tuesday evening!
