Topic outline

  • --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

There are 6 rounds of exercises in total. They are not compulsory, but since they give you actual practical experience on the course topics, they aid greatly in learning, and also merit you exam points (up to a maximum of 4).

*** Update 26 October: there is also a longer 'home' exercise that can give you 2 extra points towards the exam, scroll down to find it ***

The exercise sessions are scheduled for
18.09.20 10.15-12.30 (tasks will be available on 11.09.20, deadline is 25.09.20)
02.10.20 10.15-12.30 (tasks will be available on 25.09.20, deadline is 09.10.20)
16.10.20 10.15-12.30 (tasks will be available on 09.10.20, deadline is 23.10.20)
06.11.20 10.15-12.30 (tasks will be available on 30.10.20, deadline is 13.11.20)
13.11.20 10.15-12.30 (tasks will be available on 06.11.20, deadline is 20.11.20)
20.11.20 10.15-12.30 (tasks will be available on 13.11.20, deadline is 27.11.20)

The tasks for each round are published approximately two weeks before their DL. The solved exercises are to be returned to MyCourses and the deadline for each round is at 12:00 on the given day. The returned solutions are to be in the format of a single pdf document, which contains everything required (calculations, verbal answers, figures etc.). If the exercise requires data analysis, the codes used in solving should also be added to the end of the document as an appendix. It is recommended to use Matlab or python, however, any other programming/scripting languages are accepted.

The exercise sessions are on the Fridays one week before the DL and consist mostly of the assistant giving information on the exercises, tips etc. and also provide a possibility to ask questions about tasks or to discuss solutions proposed for the previous exercise round. It is recommended to start working on the exercises before the corresponding session so that you actually know what the problematic parts will be.

Grading: The exercises will be given points from 0-2. 1 point will be given if the exercise has been solved at least partially and it is clear that the student tried hard and had understood important concepts related to the exercise, but for some reason could not solve the exercise completely. 2 points require that the exercise has been solved, but even then the solution does not need to be perfect and minor mistakes are forgiven. 0 points mean that the merits of the solution do not reach the requirements for 1 point or that there is no solution at all.

Questions related to exercises can be presented to the assistant via e-mail: ivan.radevici@aalto.fi

Additionally, there is a home exercise, which allows you to work on a bit wider problem. Working seriously on it can give you a maximum of 2 point towards the exam.
