    Assignments

Here you will find your weekly assignments. There are three types of exercises:

    1. Exploratory exercises
    2. Homework (to be returned for marking)
    3. Additional exercises

    1. Exploratory exercises are meant to help you to prepare for the lectures and the more theoretical topics we will cover, and I may return to them during the lectures. They are meant to be tried to attempt in the beginning of the week and it is recommended to work on them in groups. These can be also discussed in the early exercise class of the week, but I recommend to think about them before the lectures. Course’s lecture notes are already available in MyCourses (Materials section), which cover these topics, so you can look at them already before the lecture. Hoeever, it is often not difficult to come up with a solution to these problems (especially not if one looks in the textbook), but the difficulty lies in comparing your solutions to those of others. You do not need to return these for marking.

    2. Homework will be marked by the Teaching Assistants every week. These will count 60% of your final grade (40% will come from the final exam). You can work on them also in the later exercise class of each week. You can collaborate on these exercises and also I recommend to join our Zulip forum

      https://ms-a0402.zulip.aalto.fi/

and in particular the actively monitored Math help center( Laskutupa ):

    https://math.aalto.fi/en/studies/laskutupa/

where you can ask tips and hints for the exercises. However, you must write your own solutions yourself. You can use LaTeX. They need to be returned for marking through MyCourses (return boxes are set up below, scanned copy as a PDF) by Monday 12:00 the week after. (I.e. for example for Week 2 exercise sheet, you need to return the homework for marking by Monday 12:00 on Week 3). The model solutions will then be released on few days after the deadline in case someone returns late for a good reason (you need to contact your Teaching Assistant to arrange a late return, and give a reason, e.g. health related, the TA can then decide if they still accept your solutions). Note we want to release the model solutions quite soon after the deadline so that students can reflect on their performance and answers.  On Week 1, there are no homework to be returned for marking!

    3. Additional exercises can be discussed in the second exercise class of the week or alone. Working in groups is highly recommended though with additional exercises. Solutions to these exercises might be covered during the exercise classes if they are deemed useful.

    • Week 1

Exploratory + additional exercises week 1. You do not need to return these for marking, we will have homework that need to be returned from marking from Week 2 onwards.
