Pre-assignment 2: Differences in Academic Writing between Cultures (Read before class (9:00 am) on 06.06)

Read one of the articles / book chapters below that focuses on the differences in academic writing between English and your mother tongue. If your mother tongue is not listed, contact Maurice. You only need to read the pages cited below. If the article is longer than 15 pages, you can stop at 15 pages, but make sure you read the abstract, introduction, conclusion and literature review sections. Note: write down the reference or open the link in a new tab as in most cases, the link is an Aalto Primo permalink that takes you to Aalto Primo first, not the specific journal or article.

Be prepared to answer the following:

      • What similarities or differences are mentioned between academic writing in your mother tongue compared to academic writing in English?
      • Based on your experience, do you agree or disagree with these?
