Topic outline

  • This course provides the student with basic tools for solving problems related to radioactive decay, neutron statics and kinetics, and heat transfer in nuclear reactors. 

    After completing the course, the student should have a good general knowledge of the basic physics, operating principles and structure of a nuclear reactor and of the main components and steam process of a nuclear power plant. In addition, the student should gain basic knowledge on nuclear safety, nuclear fuel production, fuel cycles, waste handling and the role of nuclear energy as a part of global energy economy.

    The course consists of lectures and exercise sessions.

    Grading is based on either a final exam (3 h) or two mid-term exams (3 h each). Additional points are available from homework exercises.
