Topic outline

  • Assignment related questions:

Should I really use _all_ materials covered in pre-readings and class to formulate my questions?

No. Although the evaluation rubric indicates that you should "Account all given material" to get full points, it is enough to use "several". The point is to create questions that cover more than one source material and links them together.

What does a good exam question look like?

A good rule of thumb when formulating the question is this - would someone else really be able to answer the question in an exam situation? Moreover, would your question strike you or some other student as fair or overly attached to some small detail that would be hard to recall in an exam situation? Or would answering that questions require knowledge outside the scope of this course? The point is to create challenging but fair exam questions we could actually use :)

Can I somehow see examples of good questions?

We will add a section about submitted questions shortly.

I did not get a good grade on my assignment. Can I somehow rise my grade for individual assignments?

Yes. You will have a possibility to renew ONE past assignment of your own choosing in the end of the course.

    Exam-related questions:

Can we use course material in the exam?

Yes. The exam will be an open-book exam.

Is the exam pen and paper or computer assisted?

It is a computer assisted exam.

I cannot make the exam - can I do it at home?

No. This is a traditional classroom exam. If you miss the first exam, you can always take the renew exam later.

    Other questions:

What is the pointing policy on zoom vs. in-class participation?

Attendance for a lecture or workshop in class will give you about 0.8 points (10 points divided by 12 sessions) and attending via Zoom will yield half of that so about 0.4 points.

The standard for Bachelor level mandatory courses is to have full attendance requirement. However, we felt that especially for Tuesday it should be possible to follow the lecture on Zoom if it is more convenient for you. However, following lectures on Zoom is never as engaged as in class (we all know it is true). So we award half of the points for that. For workshops the reasoning is evident - we are utilizing a lot of canvas methods so physically attending is a must for full participation.

We will reconsider this approach in the next iteration of this course based on your feedback, so please share your opinions in the final feedback form.

How does the grading work for the whole course?

The final grade for the course is based on the grade for the assignments (40%), participation (10%), and the grade for the written exam (50%)

We will use the following thresholds for grades:
    90 points or over - 5
    80 points or over - 4
    70 points or over - 3
    60 points or over - 2
    50 points or over - 1
49 points or below - Fail
