Natural products have had a major impact on chemistry, chemical biology and drug discovery and have been part of medical remedies since ancient times. Nowadays, natural products represent an important source of leads for medicinal chemistry. Drugs developed from natural products are used for the treatment of cancer, cardiovascular diseases, bacterial and fungal infections.
This course will familiriase you with Natural Product Chemistry, and gives you a fundamental understanding on the concept of natural products as secondary metabolites, their structures, claassification, occurrence, and biosynthetic pathways. Typical synthetic routes and pharmacological properties are also briefly introduced.
During the course, the you will build up a portfolio on an assigned target natural product, natural product class or natural peroduct application. You will present the portfolio in the form of a final seminar. Course marking will be based on learning diary (30%), literature essay (40%), seminar (20%) and self assessment (10%). No final exam!
