Course Description
The aim of the course is to give students in-depth competences with Experience-driven Design (XD) paradigm and interaction design in a product development process. Students will practice the early phases of a product development process: from background studies to concept design and to prototyping.
The main task for students is to design an experiential concept and prototype based on the given design assignment. The students learn to specify design goals for user/customer/brand experience; to plan a design project addressing human experiences; processes and methods to design rewarding experiences; presenting and justifying design concepts from the angle of human experience; and evaluating experiences.
The
course gives the students competences and experience in collaboration
with industrial and other external partners. Due to the orientation to
addressing real world briefs with Experience-driven Design, the exact
content of the course changes year by year. Year 2016 the focus is on
user interface and interaction design, as requested in the company
assignments. In addition, a radical concept will be developed to
envision the best possible experience.
The students learn about theoretical and conceptual approaches to describe the experiential aspects of human-technology interaction. They learn to critically follow discussion about user experience and experience design.
The in-depth competence of Experience-driven Design approach can be gained only by taking the 10cr version of the course that includes the XD project done for a partner company. A 5 credit alternative is offered to a limited number of minor students, including the introduction to Experience-driven Design through lectures and literature without taking part in the design oriented project teamwork of the module. The lectures and literature are integrated in the Experience-driven Design module. The students will need to, in addition to actively attending the lectures, homework discussions, and presentations, write an article/essay based on the related literature as agreed with the lecturer. If you want to choose the 5cr version, please inform us by email, virpi.roto@aalto.fi.
