EX.#5: DIVERSITY
DIVERSITY
In principle, diversity “counts” the variation of observed items in a container. In comparison to density, diversity quantifies some other qualitative features than just volume. It is not only about size, but also about characteristics. What is the range of different things in specific locations?
Like the density analysis, diversity is not a single measurement but a family of measurements. It is a measure of heterogeneity and is found in many variations across disciplines, for example in the measures of entropy in statistical mechanics, or in information theory. An important aspect when talking about the urban, is the kind and diversity of choices that we have for daily, weekly, monthly, or seasonal transactions.
Task
This week’s task is twofold:
- From your own study line or disciplinary perspective, figure out what is the feature of diversity relevant to good/bad urban environment?
- How can it be measured?
