    Assignments needed for the completion of this course:

    1 Your contribution to the course publication (book).

    2 Your contribution to the Reading Room event (reading, performance, video... or something else)

    Items 1 and 2 can be the same project, done individually or with other people.

    3  Course diary submitted at the end of the course (Friday 24 May at the latest). Describe your ideas, findings, readings, learnings, thinkings on the course, as well as feedback. Length: 2–3 average pages.


    WEEK 1

    Designer as writer. Writing tools and technologies

    We get to know each other and the course. 
    We discuss how we read, how we write, if and when we do. 
    We try to find out we think of ourselves as writers.
    We get to work immediately, to think how text is made. We write collectively in groups using different tools.

    An assignment for tomorrow: Retyping. Choose a text (in English) to retype. Copy everything in it by retyping it on a computer. There should be roughly three A4 pages of text. Print it on paper and bring to class tomorrow (one sided prints).
    Also: Bring a favourite book, with no images in it.

    Uncreative writing

    Prints on wall! We look at the results of the retyping assignment and discuss. 
    We consider creative and uncreative writing. 
    We continue experimenting with words. 
    We do exercises in citing, stealing, and appropriating the words of others. 
    We refer to collage, Oulipian writers, Situationist practices, Conceptual poets.

    An assignment for next week: Switch the retyped text to another person. Do a layout that is as unreadable/illegible as possible. Print it on A3 paper and bring to class on Tuesday.

    Prints on wall! We look at the results of the illegibility assignment and discuss.
    We talk about the borderlines of text and image. 
    We refer to asemic writing, concrete poetry, and duck-rabbits.
