Preparing the ingredients for your problem presentation and pitch

You might want to write a problem definition. i.e. research and think about the following questions:

  • What is the key issue you are trying to address and why is it important?
  • For whom is it a problem? (Can be several stakeholder groups)
  • What social or cultural factors shape this problem?
  • What evidence do you have that this is worth the investment (your time during this course, later maybe also money and other resources)
  • Can you think of this problem in a different way? Can you re-frame it?

See more at: https://diytoolkit.org/tools/problem-definition-2/ and feel free to find more relevant sources like http://www.lucykimbell.com/stuff/Fieldstudio_SocialDesignMethodsMenu.pdf

Contents of the problem presentation: Two (2) Problems

For the problem presentation, please present two (2) problems and your action plan

Problem 1 (1-3 minutes)

  • What is the key issue you are trying to address, and why is it important?
  • For whom is it a problem? (There can be several stakeholder groups)
  • How will your team reach the relevant stakeholders for interviews and prototyping in short enough time?

Problem 2 (1-3 minutes)

  • What is the key issue you are trying to address, and why is it important?
  • For whom is it a problem? (There can be several stakeholder groups)
  • How will your team reach the relevant stakeholders for interviews and prototyping in short enough time?

Your action plan for the next two weeks (1-3 minutes)

  • How will you decide which problem (problem 1 or problem 2) you will research and solve? (If you have chosen already, please share your decision and reasoning with the class.)
  • How will your team reach the potential users for interviews and prototyping in short enough time? Please, be as concrete and precise with this part as possible (e.g. “We will ask in a FB/Telegram/.. group for a volunteer to be interviewed” is too vague here.)

As this is a course with a relatively tight schedule, please put effort into deciding “How will your team reach the potential users for interviews and prototyping in short enough time?” You will need to iterate with the solution fast, so you need dozens of informants (i.e. relevant people to interact with).

The problem presentation will be graded pass/fail. The total length of the presentation is 3-9 minutes.

Please make a clear distinction which of your statements are assumptions, which are facts and which are opinions. Assumptions are a very good starting point, but should not be confused with facts.
