LEARNING OUTCOMES

This course provides basic engineering skills for working in a compay's investment and development project.

After the course the student
1. has acquired advanced knowledge on process design and preliminary plant design
2. can size industrial scale process equipment
3. can calculate material and energy balances
4. can use simulation in process design
5. can draw block and process flow diagrams (PFD)
6. can work in project groups towards a common goal
7. can manage a team and learn leadership
8. can run and manage a project as project manager

CONTENT, ASSESSMENT AND WORKLOAD

Content
  • valid for whole curriculum period:

    1. Basics of plant design
    2. Dimensioning the process and the most common equipment
    3. Comparison of process alternatives
    4. Process design: material and energy balance, block diagram, PFD
    5. Use of design tools (drawing, simulation)

    Continuation of Principles of Plant and Process Design (CHEM-E7127). Project work is done in same team of 5-6 students. The design project in part B is divided into two reports:
    1. Background information (SoA), process comparison and selection
    2. Mass balance, process flow diagram

    The reports are presented in project meetings with industrial and university advisors that are organised by one member of the student group (project manager). The work is to be continued with the same student groups in Autumn periods I and II in Capstone Project for Plant Design.

    • Chemical and Process Engineering (CPE) of MSc in Chemical, Biochemical and Materials Engineering
    • Sustainable Metals Processing (SMP) of MSc in Chemical, Biochemical and Materials Engineering
    • and CHEM doctoral students, if they meet the required prerequisites

    A course implementation may be cancelled if the number of students enrolled to the course implementation does not meet the required minimum of five students. In the case of cancelled course implementations, the students enrolled to them must be provided with an alternative way of completing the course or be advised to take some other applicable course.
