On completing the course students will be able to identify and describe the typical characteristics and building tasks of Finnish architecture and explain the historical development behind them. They will learn to analyze, gather information and observe the given examples and produce a written description about them

Innehåll (är i kraft 01.08.2018-31.07.2020): 

The lecture course provides an introduction to the special features of Finnish architecture and the relationships between architecture, landscape, resources and history. The time line is from the Middle Ages to the end of 20th century, but with a focus on the 20th century.

Metoder, arbetssätt och bedömningsgrunder (är i kraft 01.08.2018-31.07.2020): 

Lectures, learner diary, site visits and home essays. The assessment criteria is diary and essays. The spring term course is presented at the Museum of Finnish Architecture.

Depending
on interest and activity, the student can get 1–2 ects for the course. In
order to earn credits, non-attendance at a lecture must be compensated with a
short essay / study.

13.3. Lecture 1: From building to architecture – from
vernacular building to early Neoclassicism

20.3. Lecture 2: The Finnish wooden town and the 19th
century stone architecture. Helsinki from the 17th to 20th century

21.3. Walking tour in
the historical centre of Helsinki, 2–4 p.m.

27.3. Lecture 3: Finnish architecture from around 1900 to
the 1940's: National Romanticism, the Classicism of the 1920's, 
Functionalism.

3.4. Lecture 4: Finnish architecture after World War II. The
Golden Age of the 1950's, the building boom of the 1960's, and the later
tendencies

4.4. (date non confirmed yet) Alvar Aalto excursion in
Helsinki, roughly 2–4 p.m. (entrance fees max. 20 €, except for the students of Aalto university; reduced entrance fees with student card)

Lectures will be held 6-7:30 p.m.
