Spring periods III-V. The course will be held if there are at least eight participants.


Lärandemål (är i kraft 01.08.2018-31.07.2020): 

The aim of the course is to deepen students’ knowledge of the significance of dwelling, housing construction and housing design, both within society and globally. Through science, theory and literature, as well as multidisciplinary and multi-scientific lectures, the students are offered new sustainable and open-minded approaches to housing design. In the assignment the students learn to apply the knowledge and the new ideas it generates in actual housing design.


Innehåll (är i kraft 01.08.2018-31.07.2020): 

The content of the course varies, depending on the site, theme and emphasis. The central part of the course consists of a design task serving the respective objectives of the course. The assignment is preceded by a diverse theoretical and source literature based deliberation and analysis.


Närmare beskrivning av kursens innehåll (gäller denna kursomgång): 

In spring 2019, the topic of the course will be creating new flexible and  housing solutions for small households. An infill site in Rastila will serve as surroundings for a building design project of ca 4000-5000m2. 

Metoder, arbetssätt och bedömningsgrunder (är i kraft 01.08.2018-31.07.2020): 

A studio format design course.

Working methods:                    

  •  lectures and presentations
  •  familiarisation with the relevant literature in the subject area, essays
  •  studio-type work, in both groups and individually
  • participation in the intermediate   and final critiques
  • optional excursion

Assessment criteria:

  •  participation in the work and level of activity on the course
  •  assignment, graded on the scale 0-5

In evaluation, emphasis will be on the student`s individual design project.

Arbetsmängd (är i kraft 01.08.2018-31.07.2020): 

There is variation between the workloads of separate teaching methods. More precise information will be provided in the course brochure.

Total workload 270 hrs

Independent work for the individual part of the study assignment, 12 weeks

> 192 hrs / 12 weeks = 16 hrs

During the course a 3-4 day excursion will be arranged, if there are sufficient participants. The excursion is optional and an additional study credit will be awarded for it.

  • Before participating in studio courses student need to have finished their bachelor studies and applied for the bachelor's degree.

Bedömningsskala (är i kraft 01.08.2018-31.07.2020): 

The assignment is graded on the scale 0-5. The level of participation and activity during the course influence the final grade.

The order of priority for admitting students to courses at Aalto ARTS 1.1.2018 onwards (approved by The Committee of Arts, Design and Architecture on 10.10.2017)

The order of priority is as follows:

  1. students for whom the course is compulsory for their major/programme and who have scheduled it for the current academic year in their personal study plan (HOPS);
  2. exchange students for whom the course is a part of his/her officially approved learning agreement and scheduled to be taken during the current semester;
  3. students for whom the course is compulsory for their major/programme and who have not completed it yet;
  4. students, for whom the course is part of his/her major’s or programme’s alternative studies and has been scheduled in the student's PSP (HOPS) for the current academic year
  5. students, for whom the course is part of his/her major’s or programme’s alternative studies and who have not completed the requisite number of credits for alternative studies yet;
  6. students for whom the course is compulsory for their minor;
  7. students, for whom the course is part of his/her minor subject’s alternative studies and who have not completed the requisite number of credits for alternative studies yet;
  8. students who have applied for the course through a student mobility scheme (internal mobility within Aalto University, flexible study right (JOO) studies etc.);
  9. other students.

 

Courses that are intended to be multidisciplinary (e.g. UWAS courses) may apply an order of priority based on the learning outcomes of the course, while bearing in mind the university obligation of enabling students to complete their degrees within the normative duration of study set for the degree. The order of priority does not apply to courses organised by the Centre for General Studies or doctoral courses.

This decision on the order of priority does not influence the right of the teacher to define prerequisites for the course.
