The student will be able to set goals for her/his artistic work. She/ he will able to explain her/his artistic choices and working process. The student will become familiar with the different forms of the practice of painting in contemporary art.

Content (valid 01.08.2018-31.07.2020):

The content of the course is largely made up of topics introduced by students. Comparison and productive meeting of different working methods. Students will familiarize themselves with working methods and themes of contemporary painters.

Details on the course content (applies in this implementation):

The task and the goal in the course is to proceed in ones own artistic practice. The task is very open on purpose.

Proceeding in a fruitful way towards the goals one has herself set is the hard part of the artistic work. How to do that?

The course will focus mainly on the students own work in the classroom. Contact teaching.

As an addition to that we will make gallery visits and see some museum exhibitions. The students will write a short (1-2 A4 pages) text reflecting their own painting practice with what they have seen in the galleries as well as in the museums.

We will have three half-day critic sessions and each student has to take part in two of them. Students are expected to take actively part in the free discussion around fellow student's artistic practice.

Assessment Methods and Criteria (valid 01.08.2018-31.07.2020):

The student is required to carry out a painting project and present her /his work in group critiques. Discussions, exhibition visits. Assessment criteria: personal progress of the student and the ability to express and utilise what he or she has learned.

Elaboration of the evaluation criteria and methods, and acquainting students with the evaluation (applies in this implementation):

The biggest emphasis is on painting, both on the process and on the end result. Development is the key factor.

Presence in the possible lecture will be appreciated.

Activity in reflective discussion around one's own work as well as around fellow students' work during the critic sessions is important. We learn a lot about the artistic process by opening our mouths and taking part in a discussion around painting.

As well the quality of reflection in the text will be appreciated. Ability to understand the qualities in painting (f.eg. use of colour, brushwork, collage, perspective, other depth-illusion etc.) and the capability in seeing at least some connections to ones own painting practice is good to put into words. Such writing practice can increase one's own development.

Skills in reflection. What do I find easy in painting? What is painfully difficult for me? What are my goals now and in the future? What have I already learned? How could I take some steps towards my goals in painting? What are my next steps?

Presence without being absent many times as well as working throughout the day will be appreciated.
