Additional information for the course (applies in this implementation):

Essential Black & White

The course instructs students to work with black and white analog photo material. The course teaches the basics of film developing and print making. It is also possible to deepen your previous knowledge of your photo lab practice or to make photographic experiments within the scope of available materials and premises.

The course consists of lectures on darkroom praxis, group discussions, individual guidance and independent work. During the group meetings we ponder over various issues that have come to the fore during the practical work. We will also discuss your ongoing course work, the content and form, and it’s varied readings and interpretations.

Tools

We use two different sizes of films at the course. To photograph the films you need a 35mm analogue film camera and/or a 6x7 medium format film camera.

Additional info

You can also bring with you pre-developed film(s), so you can start the course with printing instead of film work. We work step by step because there are only 3 workstations in the Väre darkroom. We also have Otakaari 1X darkroom with 3 workstations to be used during the course. Film development and printing take place in the same premises.

It is possible to develop 35mm film, 6x7 medium size roll film and 4x5 large format sheet films in the darkrooms. These are also the film formats you can use to make prints, all though the course doesn’t provide students with the 4x5 film material itself.

Course materials

The workshop uses 35mm and 6x7 roll film as educational material. We use 24x30cm size photo paper for contact sheets, 18x24cm photo paper and 24x30cm fiber paper for printing. All needed chemicals for the mentioned work are included in the course materials.
